Wollongong Advocacy Training!

You’re Invited to Change the World

You don’t have to be a politician, a celebrity or a CEO to change the world.  The most powerful instruments of change are actually people like you or me, ordinary people who join together to make an extraordinary difference in their community.

Advocates are people who defend a cause, influence governments and create real change.  As you are a member of CanAct, we would like to invite you to develop your advocacy skills with two days of specialized training.

What | An advocacy training program

When | Friday and Saturday, the 7th and 8th of March 2014

Where | Wollongong

Cost | Free (we will even provide accommodation if you are out of area)

CanAct is an active organization with over 10,000 community members.  It plays a lead role in lobbying the Government for improvements in the treatment and care of people with cancer as well as public health initiatives that reduce the incidence of cancer and increase cancer survival rates.

This training program will be a great interactive opportunity for you to connect with other passionate people and learn how to effectively develop your advocacy skills to help improve cancer policies and systems. You will also get the chance to meet local MPs and learn about some of the issues affecting cancer patients in our region.

The CanAct community has achieved significant successes in cancer policy across Local, State and Federal Governments. Some of these big wins include:

  • Boosting funding to the Isolated Patient and Accommodation Assistance Scheme (IPTAAS) by $28 million
  • Banning smoking in public areas including kid’s playgrounds and bus shelters
  • Making it an offence to smoke in the car with children present
  • Banning solariums in NSW by December 2014

These amazing feats were successful due to the large support and input from all our CanAct members. Involvement in this training program will not only aid your advocacy skills but also help you become more involved with both local and state-wide advocacy campaigns.

We would love to see you there. If you are interested in attending or would like more information on the training days please reply to this email or register your interest online at: http://canact.com.au/advocacy-training/
