Join WHO Instagram campaign #YearsAhead and help combat ageism

The launch of the first ever World report on ageing and health provided a fantastic opportunity to talk about the fundamental changes, not just in the way that health care is delivered, but also in society as a whole, that are needed if we are all to have the freedom, as we age, to live life as we choose.

A comprehensive Global strategy and action plan on ageing and health, \is under development and will outline the key actions over the next five years for WHO, http://who.int/ageing/consultation/en/.

In the lead-up to the global consultation on the strategy and action plan on 29-30 October in Geneva, we are launching an Instagram campaign #YearsAhead to help build public engagement on this issue.

Those who are #YearsAhead in age make important contributions to families, communities and societies. There is no typical older person and how we experience older age depends on our health, our environment and how we perceive the #YearsAhead.

You can help change how ageing and older age are perceived. Here’s how.

Start by posting a photo of yourself, or of someone you know (if they give  permission) embracing older age or challenging common misconceptions about ageing, on Instagram or Twitter, using the hashtag #YearsAhead. Kick-starting the campaign is Helmut Wirz, who discovered bungee-jumping at the age of 75, and held the record as the oldest bungee jumper in the world for many years.

Also please help us get the word out by informing your networks of about the campaign.

We will be posting our favourites on the @WorldHealthOrganization Instagram account regularly up until the end of 2015.

We look forward to seeing some great photos

OneFACS Service Centre | Expression of Interest

I am writing with the exciting news that the OneFACS Service Centre expression of interest (EOI) for all non-government organisations in the Illawarra Shoalhaven District is now open and accessible via the Community Builders website.

In June 2015, the NSW Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) Illawarra Shoalhaven District (ISD) will deliver a state of the art OneFACS Service Centre in Coniston.

The aim of the Centre is to provide an integrated and innovative space where non-government organisations (NGOs) and government agencies can work together to break the cycle of disadvantage for local clients. Through the co-location of the three FACS agencies (Community Services; Ageing, Disability and Home Care; and, Housing NSW) and local human service providers, it is envisaged that the Centre will create collaborative and coordinated responses to endemic social issues in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven.

To realise these aims, ISD is seeking NGOs who can provide support in the following areas:

  • people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness;
  • people suffering from financial hardship or joblessness, or those at risk;
  • people affected by domestic or family violence;
  • people with disabilities;
  • people with mental illness;
  • people with substance misuse issues;
  • children and youth at risk
  • families at risk; or,
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities.

All information and documentation regarding the EOI process, including the application form and applicant guide is available on the Community Builders website from 9am Monday,16 March until 2pm on Monday, 13 April 2015. Please note that any applications sent after this time will not be assessed. You DO NOT need to login into the website to complete your application, simply click on the relevant link to the application form.

When completing your application please make sure all the information requested is provided as incomplete applications may not be assessed. Please do not send any attachments with your application as they will not be assessed.

Seniors Week Expo in Kiama

For Seniors Week 2014, on Monday 17th of March, the Kiama Bowling and Recreation Club are planning to host a seniors information event.

The Club will be  opening its auditorium to local community organisations who wish to advertise themselves by way of a small stall (table). With the RTA and Kiama Council already in attendance to host a scooter safety awareness class in the Clubs car park, the event should attract a good audience from older people in the community.

The auditorium is sheltered from the weather and provides a comfortable setting to showcase organisations services.

There will be no cost to participating organisations and the Club will provide tea and coffee facilities, as well as its usual facilities.

If you interested in having a stall at the Kiama Bowling Clubs Seniors Week indoor marketplace and information event, or have questions regarding the concept contact:

Age Friendly Project Survey

Kiama Council is looking to improve the Age Friendliness of the local community. This is important because our population is changing and by 2025, 27% of the community will be over 65 years.

Council is reviewing its services, facilities and the way it operates, to recognise good Age Friendly practice now, and to plan for this changing future.

Residents are assisting by completing a survey and by doing main street reviews with the Age Friendly Project staff.

If you are between 50 and 64 years of age, Council wants to know what issues you think will be important to you when you are older.

Please complete the survey by clicking on this link Kiama Council Survey

Thank you for taking the time to assist with this important project.

If you would like to know more about the Age Friendly Kiama Project or about this survey, please contact Sandra Ruecroft, Kiama Council Age Friendly Project, sandrar@kiama.nsw.gov.au or 4232 0434.
