Hepatitis Awareness Week NSW 2015

Hepatitis Awareness Week NSW 2015 runs from 27 August to 2 July 2015.  This year’s theme is Time to Act because with new treatments soon to become available we want to encourage people to see that now is the Time to Act on viral hepatitis. Final date for applications is 5pm, Friday 1st May 2015.

Now is also the Time to Act on applying for community grants.  Hepatitis NSW is providing grants of up to $2500 to NSW community organisations and health agencies to run activities that aim to raise awareness of viral hepatitis and hepatitis issues.  This includes prevention of transmission, treatment, stigma and discrimination.

All grant applications will be considered and Hepatitis NSW especially encourages creative local approaches for activities that:

  • Are held or launched between 27 July and 2 August
  • Target: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, Culturally and Linguistically
  • Diverse communities, young people, people who inject drugs and people who are or have been in prison
  • Respond to an identified local need
  • Increase awareness and understanding of viral hepatitis issues

Hepatitis NSW has helped dozens of groups with events over the years including:

  • Awards events for local hepatitis champions and advocates
  • Community forums to identify service and education gaps in the local area
  • Poster competitions, art workshops, t –shirt printing
  • Starting a support group for people living with hepatitis B or hepatitis C

Hep B Training | Friday 28th March

The Multicultural HIV and Hepatitis Service in partnership with Healthy Cities Illawarra are offering a free hepatitis B workshop for CALD community workers

Hepatitis B is a virus that can cause liver damage and liver cancer.  The majority of the 218 000 people with chronic hepatitis B were born overseas.  About half don’t know they have it.  Without appropriate care and treatment up to 25% of people with chronic hepatitis B will die from complication of cirrhosis or liver cancer.

Raising awareness in our communities is vital to address this serious health issue.

This workshop will:

  1. Improve your knowledge and understanding of hepatitis B
  2. Increase your awareness of the impact of hepatitis B
  3. Provide an opportunity to discuss your role in increasing awareness of hepatitis B among CALD communities
