Have you booked your ticket to the Affordable Housing Breakfast?

For Housingthe first time, the Illawarra Forum is partnering with the Illawarra Chapter of the Property Council to host a breakfast focussing on Affordable Housing. The focus of the breakfast is to explore both the current policy climate and new opportunities to deliver safe and affordable social, rental and purchasable properties.

Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from a range of expert speakers, and see some examples of creative solutions from the Illawarra, and from around the world.

Speakers include:

  • Sebastian James, Director Housing, Disability and Home Care Services, NSW Department of Family and Community Services
  • Nicola Lemon, Chair, Power housing Australia
  • Jennifer Macquarie, Director, Fountaindale Group
  • Joan Ferguson CEO The Housing Trust – the largest not-for-profit community housing organisation in the Illawarra

Access to affordable housing regularly comes up as the most pressing concern for our members, and the clients they serve. The Breakfast event is an opportunity for stakeholders and interested parties across the region to come together to explore the issue of access to safe, appropriate and affordable housing.

Both the Property Council and the Illawarra Forum have been preparing submissions, lobbying and advocating for some time for policy changes which promote the development of more affordable housing.

Both organisations are keen to pursue strategies which would include increasing the supply of social housing, as well as rental properties and purchasable properties which are affordable to people on low incomes.

The Deaf Society | New Home

The Deaf Society (South Coast office) is looking for a new home. We have been on the South Coast for approximately 7 years providing Deaf Society Services to the local Deaf Communities.

We would like to rent an office space within another local service (in the Shellharbour – Warrawong area, possibly Wollongong if needed).

If you have a space which may be appropriate for us, please contact Sara on southcoast@deafsociety.com or mobile 0406 940 899.

We are happy to have a chat with anyone, and answer any questions which may help us to find a place where we can continue to provide our service to the South Coast Deaf Communities.

OneFACS Service Centre | Expression of Interest

I am writing with the exciting news that the OneFACS Service Centre expression of interest (EOI) for all non-government organisations in the Illawarra Shoalhaven District is now open and accessible via the Community Builders website.

In June 2015, the NSW Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) Illawarra Shoalhaven District (ISD) will deliver a state of the art OneFACS Service Centre in Coniston.

The aim of the Centre is to provide an integrated and innovative space where non-government organisations (NGOs) and government agencies can work together to break the cycle of disadvantage for local clients. Through the co-location of the three FACS agencies (Community Services; Ageing, Disability and Home Care; and, Housing NSW) and local human service providers, it is envisaged that the Centre will create collaborative and coordinated responses to endemic social issues in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven.

To realise these aims, ISD is seeking NGOs who can provide support in the following areas:

  • people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness;
  • people suffering from financial hardship or joblessness, or those at risk;
  • people affected by domestic or family violence;
  • people with disabilities;
  • people with mental illness;
  • people with substance misuse issues;
  • children and youth at risk
  • families at risk; or,
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities.

All information and documentation regarding the EOI process, including the application form and applicant guide is available on the Community Builders website from 9am Monday,16 March until 2pm on Monday, 13 April 2015. Please note that any applications sent after this time will not be assessed. You DO NOT need to login into the website to complete your application, simply click on the relevant link to the application form.

When completing your application please make sure all the information requested is provided as incomplete applications may not be assessed. Please do not send any attachments with your application as they will not be assessed.

COTA NSW | Consumer Surveys

COTALet’s talk about where you live!

COTA NSW is seeking your opinion about housing.

Every year COTA NSW surveys people over 50 around NSW about the policy issues that affect their everyday lives.

Housing is a hot topic in NSW. We are asking people aged 50 and over about where they are living, and where they hope to live as they age.

Can you afford to stay living where you are or do you think you’ll either want, or need to move to another community in the future?

Have you ever thought about whether the house you are living now will still suit your needs as you grow older?

Click here to tell us how you feel about your housing options in terms of affordability, availability and design.

The information you provide in this survey will be used to inform our policy and advocacy efforts. By completing our survey, you’ll help us pinpoint emerging issues and shape current debates about housing in NSW in years to come.

To learn more about COTA NSW go to www.cotansw.com.au or call COTA NSW on (02) 9286 3860.

MY|Place

MY|Place youth housing supports, develops and empowers young people to break the cycle of homelessness, and encourage and equips them to make a positive contribution into their community.

This Saturday (17th of Nov) MY|Place is holding a Massive Garage Sale at the Yallah Woolshed, Princes H’way from 7am.

The community has got right behind this event and we have had 100’s of pre-loved donations come in over the past two weeks. This is a great opportunity to pick up a pre-Christmas bargain while making a difference in young people’s lives.
