Midnight Basketball is starting up in Wollongong again!

Midnight Basketball is a not for profit charity which gives high-risk youth aged 12-18 an opportunity to play basketball, participate in life-skills workshops, have dinner and a bus ride home on a Friday or Saturday night.

Midnight Basketball is a much needed initiative in Wollongong. However, the success of Midnight Basketball depends on the support of the local community – without the support of a managing committee, Midnight Basketball will not be possible.

Please find attached an outline of Midnight Basketball, available positions, and an application form. I would really appreciate it if this could be disseminated around your business/company.

Inaugural “Kids in Care” Cup

The Illawarra Titans Aboriginal Rugby League Football Club as many other Aboriginal Community based sporting clubs hope we represent more than just players in our local competition or a team at the NSW Koori Knockout. It’s events like these and those you host in your own communities that share our community’s messages.

The ‘Kids in Care” Cup aims to broaden the knowledge in community of the need for more Carers for our Kids in Statutory Care.

The event will be held on the 15th September 2013 which is the last Sunday of Foster Carers Week and will link in with the launch of the Fostering NSW Campaign in which dedicated resources and media strategies will be targeted at the recruitment of Aboriginal Carers.

Our Partners believe in the need to support the sector and believe in the concept. That’s why they have pledged support to the “Kids in Care“ Cup and will be present on the day sharing their resources to enable our community to meet this need. They will support you with information on issues such as how to become a Carer, what networks exist, where is your local Aboriginal agency and information on Legislation and reforms and types of Foster care. You will hear from each of them leading up to the event through our social media page and through print media, calling on community to look at their homes to see if they would consider becoming a respite, crisis, short or even long term carer.

Please feel free to print the attached poster to display at your community organisation. kidsincarecupWeb

In particular it examined the way independent housing assists them access informal resources (e.g. family, peer and social networks such as sporting, church, cultural and community groups) at a local community level, and how this might promote other outcomes such as social inclusion, employment, and better health.

Racism. It Stops With Me

During the National Anti-Racism Consultations I heard many stories of racism.  I would like to share just one with you that has touched me:

“I have a Cambodian daughter-in-law and mixed-race grandchildren. I accompanied them to a mothers group at the library. Nobody talked to my daughter-in-law or the children until people realised I was with them. This makes me feel very sad and concerned for the potential difficulties in the future for my grandchildren”.

Did you know that more than 1 in 10 Australians experienced discrimination on the basis of the colour of their skin, ethnic origin or their religion in the last 12 months?

So what can we do about this? We can all agree – Racism. It Stops With Me

One way you can drive this Campaign is by signing up your employer, school, sporting or community organisation. Check out our business and community prospectus for more info. Let’s rally together- speak out and send out a message that cannot be ignored- RACISM. IT STOPS WITH ME.

You can spread the word by following us on twitter re-tweeting and using the hash-tag #RacismStopsWithMe to promote the campaign.
