ASK Illawarra Shoalhaven

ASkWhat is it?

Ask Illawarra Shoalhaven is a community day of engagement to be held on Thursday 12th February 2015. On this day hundreds of volunteers from across the region will be out in their communities asking community members to share their views on the kind of community they want to live in.

Volunteers will be in community centres, parks, shopping areas, on the streets and anywhere that people gather. The information gathered from community members will:

  • start a new style of ongoing conversation with communities;
  • be gathered and then analysed by a researcher;
  • used to inform the development of strategies that best meet the wants and needs of communities across the Illawarra Shoalhaven;
  • augment and enhance existing community engagement processes used by local governments in developing community strategic plans.

We are encouraging individuals, groups, business and organisations across the Illawarra Shoalhaven to get involved in Ask Illawarra Shoalhaven, in the following ways:

  1. Volunteering your time
    We are looking for volunteers of all ages, cultural backgrounds and experiences from communities across the Illawarra and Shoalhaven to give at least one hour of your time on Thursday 12th February 2015. On the day we ask that you work with someone else to survey community members using four set questions. You can ask people you work with, in public places, in a group you are part of, anywhere in the local area. We are also looking for volunteers to type up the information we receive so that it can be analysed. You will need to participate in a 1 hour training session in your local area between 2nd – 6th February 2015, details of which will be provided by the contact people below.
  2. Being a part of the conversation
    On Thursday 12th February 2015, look for a volunteer in your community with the #ASK identification, have a chat with them and share your views on the kind of community you want to live in.

Who is organising it?

Led by the Illawarra Regional Community Development Consortium, neighbourhood centres and community organisations across the Illawarra Shoalhaven will be recruiting and supporting volunteers, hosting the training and collecting the information gathered.
